The major indexes are up slightly as they digest the latest inflation and jobs data — and more in Thursday’s stock market recap.

December’s Consumer Price Index report came in at 6.5% year over year, below the November figure of 7.1% and consensus estimates of 6.6%.

Year-over-year core CPI, which excludes food and energy, was in line with estimates of 5.7%, also below the prior number of 6%.

These figures indicate that inflation is cooling off.

Jobless claims, however, continue to fall. As the jobs market remains hot, the Federal Reserve will likely continue raising rates. The market is now pricing in a 0.25% hike at the next Federal Open Market Committee meeting.

In this morning’s stock market recap video, I’ll discuss the key factors to watch following the latest CPI report… how I expect the market to react over the next few sessions… why Communications Services is the key sector to watch right now… whether energy stocks are making a comeback or pulling back… which stocks are in play for earnings season… an update on momentum levels and what to expect next… plus which ETF I’m loving right now and why!

P.S. Now You’ll Look at Earnings Season in a Brand-New Way

If you’ve traded earnings, you’ve probably seen some good plays go south… But don’t worry, it’s not your fault.

If you’ve ever listened to legendary trader Tom Busby, you know he usually tells folks to get out of any trades when earnings season comes around.

But because of a recent discovery he’s made… he is revamping the whole playbook!

Tom discovered that right after certain earnings announcements…

There’s a special window that opens up for just 72 hours…

And this discovery has completely changed how he trades earnings.

We’re talking about huge opportunities for traders to take advantage of these 72-hour windows.

And I’m sitting down with Tom at 1 p.m. ET today, Jan. 12, so he can explain how these windows work, and how everyday traders like us can start taking advantage of them.

Each Thursday, I’ll combine two of my favorite things into a big-money opportunity: options plays and ETFs. Using options, we can turn momentum analysis of a specific sector — or even an entire country’s stock market — into an actionable trade with double- or triple-digit upside potential. I’ll give you all the details you need to execute this plan.
